Is there a way to be on a diet without breaking the bank? Yes, there is. However, we must begin by reevaluating the meaning of “diet”. The word diet has become perverted over the years by so many weight loss gurus. The true meaning of diet is food and drink considered in terms of its qualities, composition, and its effects on health. Now people hear the word diet and cringe with the thoughts of starvation and gnawing on tasteless, bland food eventually driving us back to our binging on ice cream, fast food, and snacks. And the successes of those with even the strongest of devotion to these “fad diets” eventually ends up a distant memory and leads to gaining back what you’ve lost (sometimes more). What does this yo-yo dieting do to your wallet?
Weight Loss on a Dime
Just over a year ago, my sister in law challenged me to a weight loss duel. Whom ever lost the most weight before my son’s first birthday (6 months away) would win $200. Being a person who hates losing money, I figured I better get myself in gear. However, where do I start?
I, like most people, am on a budget. I didn’t have extra money to spend on a gym membership, weight loss pills and specialty diet foods. When I started researching the foods required by the most popular fad diets, I realized why people think it’s cheaper to be fat! A new challenge was right in front of me. There just HAD to be a way to lose weight without breaking the bank! I was determined to find it.

I began tracking the savings. Ironically my grocery budget didn’t have to increase. In my foolishness, I was buying groceries but letting them spoil because I was dining out and not using up the fresh ingredients that were awaiting preparation in my refrigerator.

Butterball vs. Jennie-O, The Turkey Breast Showdown
Are all turkeys created equal? I always thought turkeys were the same across the board. But what if they really weren’t? What if one is better than the other?

The reports are astounding as to how much it truly costs to raise a child to adulthood. The actual number always fluctuates, but it is a six figure number approaching seven. I’m sure you’ve been bombarded with money saving advice, some good and some foolish. One recommendation I received was to breastfeed instead of formula feeding. But what does one do when you are physically unable to breastfeed. Here is my story…
